Moving from Georgia to Texas: License Timeline (2026)

Georgia to Texas license and registration timeline — DDS vs DPS, 90-day license rule, 30-day plates, ad valorem tax vs Texas fees, and order of operations.

Georgia DDS and Texas DPS both say “driver license,” but the clocks and offices differ once you cross the Sabine or I-20. Plan 90 days for licensing, 30 days for registration, and a Texas inspection before county plates.

Week-by-week timeline (typical)

WeekTask
1Sign Texas lease; start utilities; buy Texas auto insurance
1–2Safety inspection at licensed station
2County tax office — register vehicle, surrender GA plates
2–4DPS appointment — transfer license (~$33 Class C for 18–84)
4+Plastic license arrives by mail; keep paper temp valid

Adjust if DPS slots are 2–6 weeks out in your metro — book online before you leave Atlanta if possible.

Georgia title and lien notes

If a Georgia lender holds the title, call them early for lien release or permission to register in Texas. County clerks will not guess — they want paper that matches VIN and borrower names.

Worth knowing: Georgia’s county tag offices feel like one-stop shops. In Texas, inspection happens at a garage, registration at the county, licensing at DPS — three stops minimum.

Tests and waivers

Valid Georgia license + unexpired + issued within two years → DPS often skips written (21/30 to pass if required) and road tests.

International licenses or permits from Georgia do not follow the same waiver rules — see dedicated guides if you are on a visa.

After the license prints

Update insurance ID cards, HR systems, and medical providers. Georgia Peach Pass does not work on Texas toll roads — open a Texas tag account if you commute on SH 130 or Sam Houston Tollway.
