Moving Within Texas: Update License and Registration (2026)
Intra-Texas move checklist — change your DPS license address within 30 days, update vehicle registration at your new county tax office, and what stays the same.
You are not leaving Texas — just swapping ZIP codes from Plano to San Antonio or Houston to Lubbock. That is an intrastate move, and it still hits two offices: Texas DPS for your license and your county tax assessor-collector for the car. Out-of-state transfer guides do not apply; neither does the 90-day new-resident license clock unless you are also a brand-new Texas licensee.
DPS: license address within 30 days
Texas law expects your driver license to show where you actually live within about 30 days of the move. You are not applying for a new license — you are updating an existing Texas record.
Many drivers qualify for an online address change if they already hold a plastic Texas card (not just a paper temporary) and are not changing name or immigration documents at the same time. Details shift — start on the DPS online services page or read our online address change notes.
A common snag: You update DPS online but your physical card still lists the old city. Some insurers want the card reissued; others only need the internal DPS record. Pay the fee DPS quotes if a new card is required.
Bring two residency proofs if you visit in person: lease, mortgage statement, utility bill in your name. Roommate bills without your name still fail the window.
County tax office: registration follows the car
Vehicle registration is county-based. When the vehicle garages in a new county, notify that county’s tax assessor-collector:
- Update the registration address on file
- Confirm whether renewal will run through the new county going forward
- Pay any prorated or transfer fees your new county charges — amounts differ from Dallas to a smaller county
You usually keep the same plate numbers unless you order replacements. You are not repeating the full out-of-state title drama.
Worth knowing: Inspection still must be current when renewal comes due. Moving from a non-emissions county into DFW or Houston can mean your next renewal needs an emissions test even if you never had one before.
Insurance and voter rolls — same week, different portals
Call your auto insurer the week you move. Garaging address drives premium and claim jurisdiction; a Plano rate does not belong on a Corpus Christi policy.
Update voter registration separately — DPS can offer voter registration services in some flows, but do not assume it happened automatically. See voter registration after moving.
What you do NOT need for an in-state move
Skip these unless something else changed:
- Surrendering an out-of-state license (already Texas)
- New Texas title for the same owner and VIN
- Written or road tests
- 30-day new resident registration sprint from another state
You do need updates if you bought a different vehicle, changed your name, or let insurance lapse.
Order of operations that saves callbacks
| Step | Agency | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Landlord / utilities | Proof of new address |
| 2 | Texas DPS | License record matches reality |
| 3 | Auto insurer | Garaging ZIP correct |
| 4 | County tax office | Registration address matches garaging |
| 5 | County voter registrar | Ballot goes to the right precinct |
Doing insurance before DPS is fine; doing nothing for six weeks is how people get renewal denials and jury summons to an old address.
College towns and military PCS within Texas
UT Austin to Texas A&M or Fort Hood to Joint Base San Antonio moves are still intrastate. Students sometimes assume a dorm address does not count — if you live there more than temporary guest status, update DPS and the county. Barracks or on-base housing may need special proof; call the installation ID office and your county clerk before you queue.
Temporary housing vs permanent address
If you are in a six-month sublease while house-hunting, use the address where you sleep and receive mail today, not the suburban house you close on in August. You can update again when the purchase closes — two updates in one year beats a ticket with the wrong city on your license.
Registration renewal month after a move
If your sticker expires right after you move counties, renew through the new county once your address is on file. Inspection must still be valid. Movers from Dallas to Austin sometimes need their first emissions test at renewal even though Collin County never required one — plan an extra inspection stop.

Frequently asked questions
- How long do I have to update my license after moving within Texas?
- Texas expects a driver license address update within about 30 days of your move. The same window is a good target for vehicle registration and insurance garaging address — mismatches cause renewal and claim headaches.
- Do I re-register my car when I move to another Texas county?
- Yes. Notify your new county tax assessor-collector and update the registration address. You may keep the same plates, but the county of record and fee districts can change.
- Is an in-state Texas move the same as transferring from another state?
- No. Out-of-state moves trigger 90-day license and 30-day registration deadlines with title and inspection work. In-state moves are address updates on existing Texas credentials — faster, but still two agencies.
