Texas Temporary Permits for Out-of-State Vehicles (2026)

When Texas issues temporary tags or permits, 30-day rule vs temp options, driving legally while waiting on inspection or title, and what new residents can request.

Temporary tags are not a substitute for becoming a Texas resident on paper. They help in narrow windows — title pending, inspection failed yesterday, lender slow — not indefinite driving on another state’s plates.

The 30-day resident clock still runs

New residents generally must register within 30 days of establishing residency. A paper temp from an Arizona dealer or a Georgia drive-out tag does not pause Texas law.

People often ask if police will ticket out-of-state plates in month two. Risk rises once your Texas address is obvious (apartment garage, employer parking). Fix registration instead of betting on warnings.

County-issued temporary options

Your county tax assessor-collector may offer:

  • One-trip or 30-day permits for specific title delays
  • Transit permits in limited cases

Names and fees differ — search your county site for “temporary permit” or call before you drive to inspection without a plan.

Inspection failure scenario

You failed brakes on Monday. The shop fixes them Wednesday. You still need a new inspection certificate before registration — a temp might bridge driving to the retest if the county allows it. Do not assume; ask the county.

Moving with a brand-new purchase

If you bought in Texas from a dealer, the dealer often issues a buyer’s temp tag while title processes. Out-of-state dealer purchases need Texas title work like any other import — dealer paper from Michigan does not auto-convert.

Insurance must match the plate story

Insurers cover based on garaging and policy territory. Driving on expired temps with a policy still listing another state is a claims nightmare. Update garaging to Texas when you update plates.

Tie-in with licensing

Texas DPS license (90 days) and registration (30 days) are separate. Temps do not replace a Texas license if you are past the licensing deadline.
