Moving from Tennessee to Texas: License and Registration Steps (2026)
Tennessee-to-Texas movers: TN vs TX DPS deadlines, emissions counties, Nashville-to-Austin route tips, and what to bring when you surrender your TN license.
Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (driver services) and Texas DPS both want your business within three months of moving — but only Texas counts you as a resident once you live here. You have 90 days for a license and 30 days to register a car still on Tennessee tags. No state income tax in either place does not shorten either deadline.
Nashville to Austin: two cities, two inspection worlds
The I-40 to I-30 corridor is one of the busiest relocation paths in the South. Music City to Austin is roughly 850 miles — plan two days if you are hauling a U-Haul.
Davidson County (Nashville) runs vehicle emissions testing for gasoline cars in certain years. Travis County (Austin) requires emissions plus safety inspection before registration. Your Tennessee emissions certificate expires at the state line.
Worth knowing: Williamson County suburbs around Nashville do not mirror Davidson’s emissions program, but Austin’s metro emissions counties do include Travis. If your lease is in Round Rock (Williamson) vs downtown Austin (Travis), the inspection station and emissions requirement follow the county where you register — confirm before you pay for the wrong test type.
Electric vehicles skip emissions portions where applicable but still need the safety checklist (lights, brakes, tires, horn).
Tennessee registration vs Texas county fees
Tennessee registration renewals go through county clerks with state fees plus wheel tax in some counties (Knoxville, Memphis area). Texas rolls weight-based registration charges and county fees into the tax assessor-collector bill.
You surrender Tennessee plates when Texas plates arrive. A common snag: drivers assume the 90-day license window covers registration. It does not. Day 31 on Tennessee tags after you establish Texas residency is already a registration problem.
Switch insurance to a Texas policy before inspection — garages and county offices want an in-state card meeting 30/60/25 liability minimums.
What DPS expects from Tennessee drivers
Your valid Tennessee driver license — unexpired, with photo — typically waives written and road tests when issued within the last two years. You hand over the TN card when Texas issues a paper temporary license; the plastic arrives by mail.
Also pack:
- Identity backup (passport or certified birth certificate)
- Social Security verification
- Two residency documents with your Texas address
- County registration receipt if the DPS office asks (some do)
Book DPS early if you are landing in Austin — Austin-area appointment tips cover which offices move fastest. Class C license fee for ages 18–84 is about $33; written test passing score is 21 of 30 if testing is required.
REAL ID stars on a Tennessee license do not automatically convert — Texas issues its own REAL ID when you bring the full document set.
Emissions map for former Tennesseans
Tennessee emissions counties cluster around Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Texas emissions counties cluster around Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso — not statewide.
The 2026 Texas emissions county list shows exactly where the OBD test applies. Moving from a non-emissions Tennessee county to suburban Houston can mean your first emissions test ever.
Memphis, Knoxville, and corporate relocations
FedEx, HCA, and Nissan transfers pull Tennessee plates to Texas regularly. If your employer covers relocation, still book DPS yourself — corporate movers handle household goods, not your driver license surrender window.
Memphis (Shelby County) and Knoxville (Knox County) run Tennessee emissions programs for eligible vehicles. El Paso-bound movers from East Tennessee face a long haul — I-40 west to I-30 or I-55 south — but the paperwork sequence stays the same: insurance, inspection, registration, then DPS.
Tennessee handgun carry permits and driver licenses are separate credentials. Texas license transfer does not automatically convert a Tennessee carry permit — that is a different DPS division with its own timeline if you plan to carry in Texas.
A common snag: expired Tennessee license during a gap between jobs. DPS treats expired out-of-state cards harshly — written test at minimum. Renew online through Tennessee Driver Services before your move if the expiration date falls inside your first Texas month.
Temporary 30-day Texas permits exist for out-of-state vehicles in some edge cases — useful if inspection parts are on back order — but they do not replace the license transfer. See general transfer steps in how to transfer your driver’s license to Texas for the license side of the checklist.

Frequently asked questions
- How long do Tennessee residents have to get a Texas driver's license?
- New Texas residents have 90 days after establishing residency to obtain a Texas driver license. Vehicle registration follows a separate 30-day deadline through your county tax assessor-collector.
- Does Tennessee's lack of state income tax matter for my Texas license?
- No. Texas also has no state income tax, but that has zero effect on DPS or registration paperwork. You still need Texas insurance, inspection, residency proof, and a DPS appointment on the normal timelines.
- Do Nashville drivers need an emissions test in Texas?
- Tennessee emissions rules in Davidson County do not carry over. Texas requires annual safety inspection everywhere inspections apply, plus emissions testing only in certain counties — including Travis (Austin), Harris (Houston), Dallas, Tarrant, and others. Check your new county before you inspect.
